Vascular Ultrasound - The Basics
Leonardo Faundez, MA-ED, BSc, DMS, RDMS, RVT, CRGS, CRVS, Owner & Founder, Aprende Canada

Leonardo has been in the ultrasound field for 20+ years as a sonographer, professor, entrepreneur, and lecturer. He currently works in 2 roles as owner/founder of Aprende Canada where he offers sonography continuing education on-site and online via webinars and videos, and as Ultrasound Lead Instructor at Anderson College in Toronto, Canada. He has worked as a full-time sonographer and clinical instructor for 9 years at University Health Network and had the chance to work in small healthcare facilities as well. Leonardo was also an ultrasound faculty at The Michener Institute for 10 years and has presented at several national and provincial conferences on several sonography topics. He volunteered as the Vascular Editor of the Canadian Journal of Medical Sonography (CJMS) for two years, has a master’s degree in education from Central Michigan University and a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from York University. Leonardo enjoys travelling with his wife, playing and watching soccer, writing, and DJing. At the end of this session, attendees will have an understanding of relevant vascular ultrasound terminology and concepts while becoming familiar with hemodynamics.

Upper Extremity Venous Sonography

At the end of this session, attendees will be familiar with upper extremity venous anatomy and hemodynamics and will know about basic extremity venous scanning techniques. Attendees will also be able to recognize normal upper extremity venous sonographic features.

Sonographic Follow-up on Endovascular Aortic Repair (EVAR)
Dr. Fernanda Costa Sampaio Silva, MD, MSc, DMS, Associate Researcher, Federal University of Bahia, Brazil, Diagnostic Medical Sonographer, Hamilton Vascular Laboratory, ON, Canada

Dr. Fernanda Costa Sampaio Silva is Brazilian Board-Certified Vascular Surgeon and Vascular Sonographer. She graduated in Medicine at Federal University of Bahia, Brazil, where she also did Medical Residency in General and Vascular Surgery. Over the past 17 years, Dr. Costa has devoted herself to outpatient care of vascular diseases, with a focus on vascular imaging research. She received her Master of Science from the Federal University of Bahia, where she holds an appointment as associate researcher for the Postgraduate Program in Medicine and Health. Dr. Costa is also a committee member of the Society for Vascular Surgery and Editorial Board Member for the British Journal of Surgery. She is transitioning her career to Canada, where she works as Diagnostic Medical Sonographer for Hamilton Vascular Laboratory.

In this presentation, attendees will learn about the scanning protocol for aortic endograft surveillance and adjusting the machine to optimize accuracy. Identifying and classifying the different types of endoleak, target points for monitoring, situations when a surgeon must be immediately contacted and the role of Enhanced Contrast Ultrasound (ECUS) and it's limitations will also be covered.

Ultrasound Evaluation of Lower Limb Grafts
Dr. Fernanda Costa Sampaio Silva, Universidade Federal da Bahia, Programa de pós-graduação em Medicina e Saúde, Master of Science, Brazilian Board Certified Vascular Surgeon and Vascular Sonographer, DMS 

Attendees of this session will learn about how to understand the different types of revascularizations including angioplasty, stents and bypass. Scanning the protocol for graft surveillance and criteria for graft stenosis will be covered. In addition, attendees will learn about how to identify graft failure/occlusion, the role of ABI and flow pattern and the role of the sonographer in limb salvage.

Ultrasound Assessment of the Extracranial Carotid Arteries
Kaylana Parente, DMS, RVT, Ultrasound Technologist, Hamilton Health Sciences - Hamilton General Hospital

Kaylana Parente graduated from McMaster University with a degree in Medical Radiation Sciences specialized in Ultrasound. She has worked as an ultrasound technologist since that time at the Hamilton General Hospital, a large tertiary teaching hospital and neuro-vascular site. Kaylana also gained vascular experience by working 1-2 days a week in sites dedicated to outpatient vascular labs where she performed specialized vascular and neurological ultrasound exams. Kaylana earned her love of teaching by being the Clinical Education Leader for Mohawk-McMaster Ultrasound students. She later graduated in 2021 with a Masters of Health Management degree from McMaster University. Attendees of this session will get an overview of extracranial carotid artery anatomy, extracranial carotid artery ultrasound protocol, and plaque characterization. An evaluation of a stenosis within carotid artery system, post-operative ultrasound evaluation of carotid arteries (endarterectomy and stents), and case review examples will also be covered in detail.
