The Caring for People with Intellectual Disabilities course was created in partnership with Special Olympics Ontario and its Healthy Communities initiative (funded by the Golisano Foundation), and Health Care Access Research and Developmental Disabilities (H-CARDD), to help imaging technologists better care for people with intellectual disabilities.
People with intellectual disabilities experience significant barriers in accessing quality healthcare services. One reason for this is the lack of training healthcare providers receive in caring for this patient population. Consequently, many healthcare providers feel lack of confidence in delivering health services to people with intellectual disabilities. Specifically, this course aims to highlight common ways imaging technologists interact with people with intellectual disabilities, bring attention to potential “triggers” people with intellectual disabilities may experience with various imaging procedures, and suggest strategies healthcare providers can adopt to provide better care for these patients.

Learning Hours: The course takes approximately 2.5 hours to complete. OAMRS courses are designed for self-paced learning. Rough estimates of the time required to complete the course may be provided, but we encourage each learner to invest their own time, based on their own learning needs, for each subject matter.

Completion Requirement: There is a final exam at the end of the course. In order to successfully pass the exam, you are required to attain a mark of 75%. 3 attempts are allowed.
