Interesting Cases in Sport Medicine

Dr. Sheryl Wark, CCFP(SEM), Dip. Sport Medicine, HBKin, BSc(x2), Dip Nuc Med Tech, Family and Sport Medicine Physician, NOSM Assistant Professor

Dr. Sheryl Wark is a certified Sport Medicine Physician who is from Thunder Bay.  She completed her Kinesiology and Psychology at Lakehead University and worked as a personal trainer/Kinesiologist while continuing her education in Diagnostics.  After completing her BSc in Radiation Sciences and Nuclear Medicine Diploma through the University of Toronto/Michener Institute program, she worked as a Nuclear Medicine Technologist in Winnipeg and Thunder Bay.  She then entered medical school at the Northern Ontario School of Medicine (NOSM) and went on to complete her Family Medicine Residency with NOSM as well.  She then completed her Fellowship in Sport and Exercise Medicine through the University of Manitoba/Pan Am Clinic program. During her fellowship, she spent time with the Winnipeg Jets and was the Chief Doping Control Officer for the FIFA Women's World Cup (Manitoba site). She has continued to volunteer her time after returning home, with local & international events such as the Can-Am Police-Fire Games 2016, U-18 World Baseball Championships, U-20 Women’s National Soccer Team CONCACAF Championships (Dominican Republic), the Special Olympics and Ontario Winter Games.

Dr. Wark's presentation will include a discussion of sports medicine cases with attached MRI and X-ray images. She will also touch on various sporting event coverage.

Endovascular Therapy for Acute Ischemic Stoke 

Dr. Graeme Marchuk,  Neurosurgeon, Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre

Dr. Marchuk received his endovascular and open cerebrovascular as the Charles Drake Fellow at the University of Western Ontario. He has been providing Neurovascular care to Northwestern Ontario for the past 14 years. Dr. Marchuk's presentation will review the indications and techniques available for treating acute ischemic stroke. He will explore the evaluation of such treatments in Thunder Bay, with a focus on information that is relevant to medical radiation sciences professionals.

Pulse Fluoroscopy/ALARA - Minimizing Radiation Exposure During Urology Procedures

Dr. Walid Shahrour, Urologist, Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre

Dr. Walid Shahrour completed his undergraduate degree with honours from McGill University. He studied Microbiology and Immunology. He then went on to study medicine at McGill University and finished in 2009. He underwent his residency training in the division of urology in McGill University and obtained his FRCSC certificate in June 2014.

In July 2014, Dr. Shahrour spent one year under the guidance of the well known Dr. Sanjay Kulkarni to sub-specialize in reconstructive surgery. Dr. Kulkarni is one of the world leaders in reconstructive surgery and urethral disease. 

After finishing his GURS fellowship with Dr. Kulkarni, Dr. Shahrour joined Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre in January 2016. Dr. Shahrour specializes in reconstructive surgery for urethral disease, fistulas (male/female), erectile dysfunction, male prothesis, urinary incontinence and artificial urinary sphincters. 

Dr. Shahrour has been involved with multiple research projects and is still actively pursuing research in reconstructive urology.

Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre's Neonatal and Paediatric Transport Team

 Aaron Giba, Registered Respiratory Therapist, Practice Lead, TBRHSC

Aaron Giba is the Professional Practice Lead for the Respiratory Department, and provides leadership and guidance in everyday practice as well as policy development and implementation. He has been an RTT since 2011. Outside of work, Aaron loves spending time fishing, camping and being with his family including his two daughters.

Aaron's presentation will include a brief overview of the new Neonatal and Paediatric Transport Team with a Q&A session to follow.

Videofluroscopic Swallow Studies (VFSS) and the Role of the Speech-Language Pathologist

Emily Bernie, M.Cl.Sc., SLP, Reg. CASLPO, Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre Regional Cancer Centre and Practice Lead for Speech-Language Pathologists, St. Joseph's Care Group

Emily Bernie received her Masters in Clinical Sciences in Speech-Language Pathology from Western University in 2019. She currently provides in-patient services at the TBRHSC as well as out-patient services, primarily for those with Head and Neck Cancer, at the TBRHSC Regional Cancer Centre. She is also the Professional Practice Lead for Speech-Language Pathologists at St. Joseph’s Care Group. Prior to these roles, she worked in Long-term care and community-based services through Home and Community Care Services North West (HCCSNW) in Thunder Bay and the Thunder Bay Region.

In her presentation, Emily will discuss the SLP’s role in dysphagia assessment and management, including use of instrumental assessment tools. She will also give an overview of Videofluroscopic swallow studies, including case studies in different patient population groups, including CVA, Progressive Neurological Diseases, Head and Neck Cancer.

Craniofacial Injuries in Northwestern Ontario

Dr. Bruce R. Pynn, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon, BSc, MSc, DDS, FRCD(C), Chief of Dentistry, Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre

Dr. Bruce R. Pynn currently works as the Chief of Dentistry at the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre. He is also an Assistant Professor at the Northern Ontario School of Medicine and a clinical instructor at University of Toronto and Confederation College. In his presentation, Dr. Pynn will illustrate the maxillofacial injuries in Northern Ontario, along with treatment scenarios, etiology of trauma and fracture statistics.
