Ultrasound Guided Interventions for Tendinopathies

Dr. Eugene Maida is Assistant Clinical Professor in the Departments of Medicine with a cross-appointment in Anesthesia at McMaster University. Dr. Maida is a physiatrist and interventional pain physician with a special interest in spine and musculoskeletal medicine. He completed his residency in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and later completed subspecialty training in Pain Medicine under the Department of Anesthesia at McMaster University. He has also completed a sports medicine research fellowship at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. He is currently a consultant sports medicine physician at the David Bradley Sports and Rehabilitation Centre at McMaster University and consultant physician at the Michael G. DeGroote Pain Clinic at McMaster University Medical Centre and Head Team Physician with the Hamilton Tiger Cats Football Club (CFL).

In this presentation, Dr. Maida will identify the key clinical considerations in the workup and general approach to the management of tendinopathies and will discuss the therapeutic options for the treatment of tendinopathies, with consideration of health care providers. This presentation will also include a review of existing literature and will identify the key teaching points that support injectable therapeutic options for tendinopathies.

Ultrasound of the Radial Wrist

Lisa Billone, Sonographer, DMS, RDMS, RMSKS, RVT, CRGS, CVRS, BMRSc, Hamilton Health Sciences - Hamilton General Hospital

Lisa Billone is a musculoskeletal sonographer at the Hamilton General Hospital in Ontario, Canada. She graduated from McMaster University in 2008 with a Bachelor of Medical Radiation Sciences degree. Lisa is an educator for the Ontario Association of Medical Radiation Sciences and has developed and delivered a multitude of MSK ultrasound workshops. She is a lecturer and instructor at both national and international courses and is continuously refining her knowledge and skills in this evolving field. Lisa also has a strong interest in MSK ultrasound research and has co-authored several articles and educational exhibits.  

This presentation will include a review of bone,  joint and soft tissue anatomy of the radial aspect of the wrist and a discussion of indications for radial wrist ultrasound examinations. Attendees will also be introduced to a comprehensive scanning protocol with focus on imaging technique and potential pitfalls. Finally, Lisa will review common pathologies of the radial wrist and associated sonographic findings.

Ultrasound of the Shoulder: Beyond Cuff Tears

Dr. Andrew Grainger, MD, FRCR, FRCP, Cambridge University Hospital, United Kingdom

Dr. Grainger is a consultant musculoskeletal radiologist at Cambridge University Hospital, UK and bye-Fellow of Peterhouse College at the University of Cambridge. Within the radiology sub-specialty he has particular interests in musculoskeletal ultrasound, sports imaging and imaging arthritis. He teaches radiology to clinical and pre-clinical students and teaches human anatomy in the cadaveric laboratory and classroom at the University of Cambridge and Cambridge University hospitals. He is in demand teaching and lecturing on national and international platforms and has served as visiting professor to several institutions. He is currently president of the British Society of Skeletal Radiology and has served on, and chaired committees for the International Skeletal Society, the European Society of Radiology and the Radiological Society of North America. Dr Grainger has over 150 peer reviewed publications and invited reviews and has contributed 25 book chapters. He is co-editor of 7 books. 

In this presentation, attendees will be shown how to recognize ultrasound features of rotator cuff and bursal disease other than rotator cuff tears. Dr. Grainger will also review the appearances of long head of biceps brachii pathology and will discuss other shoulder pathologies frequently encountered on ultrasound examination.

Ultrasound Evaluation of the Forefoot

Dr. Jon Jacobson, MD, FACR, Professor of Radiology, Lenox Hill Radiology, NYC, and University of California, San Diego

Dr. Jon A. Jacobson, MD FACR is a board-certified musculoskeletal radiologist. His educational background includes radiology residency at Henry Ford Hospital and musculoskeletal fellowship at the University of California at San Diego. After working for 23 years at the University of Michigan as Division Director and Professor of Radiology, and then at the University of Cincinnati, Dr. Jacobson currently works at Lenox Hill Radiology in New York City and University of California, San Diego. Dr. Jacobson’s research interests include musculoskeletal ultrasound and MRI. His academic achievements include over 250 peer-reviewed publications and many invited national and international lectures or workshops. Dr. Jacobson has been a visiting professor on over 50 occasions, is President of the Society of Skeletal Radiology, and has received numerous teaching and mentoring awards, including the 2023 Distinguished Educator Award (American Roentgen Ray Society). He is also the author of the textbook “Fundamentals of Musculoskeletal Ultrasound,” which is now in its third edition.

By the completion of Dr. Jacobson's lecture, attendees should be able to differentiate interdigital neuroma from bursa and pericapsular fibrosis following a scanning protocol to include the Mulder maneuver, list the key structures of the hallux sesamoid complex and recognize the key ultrasound features of gout.

Knee Ultrasound: Sonographic Technique & Common Pathology

Sarah Allred, DMS, CRGS, RMSK, RVT, Senior Ultrasound Technologist, Hamilton Health Sciences

Sarah Allred is a musculoskeletal sonographer at the Hamilton General Hospital in Hamilton, Ontario. Since graduating from McMaster University/Mohawk College Medical Radiation Sciences program, Sarah has been performing specialized MSK ultrasound for over 10 years and continues to dedicate time to on-going education. She enjoys learning from experts and sharing that knowledge and her experience at a variety of educational events, both locally and internationally. From participating in hands-on demonstrations and workshops or teaching at international conferences, to locally instructing McMaster students, fellows, and residents from multiple specialties, Sarah has a passion for both continually learning and growing the field of ultrasound.

During her presentation, Sarah will review the normal anatomy of the knee with correlating normal ultrasound appearance and the pitfalls related to sonography of the knee. Sarah will also discuss common pathology affecting the knee and related to the abnormal ultrasound appearance.
